School’s Strengths & Successful Practices

The Southgate School at Cedar Springs Hospital is Colorado Department of Education and AdvancED accredited. All our teachers are licensed and highly qualified in their content areas with special education endorsements.

The residential middle school and high school students are enrolled in a language arts, health/P.E., history, science, math, and affective needs classes according to their tested academic levels and graduation requirements. The elementary school students also receive instruction based on tested academic levels in writing, reading, math, computer skills, and affective needs. If a student’s needs cannot be met in one of these classes, we work with the school district to ensure that the student will stay on track for graduation at their home school.  Students receive 30 hours of school a week.  We may have up to 24 residential students.

Student Council is offered as an extracurricular activity in an effort to give the students an opportunity to engage with the community.

A student-written newsletter is sent to parents/guardians and hospital staff monthly to inform stake holders in upcoming and completed school events.

We also provide educational services for acute care students. Secondary students receive Math, Science, English and History from teachers highly qualified in the content areas. Elementary students also received the core curriculum.  They are taught by a highly qualified elementary teacher.  All acute stay patients get four hours of school Monday through Thursday.  We may have up to 24 acute care students.

Parent & Community Involvement

Parent Surveys / Other Input Each parent or guardian is called monthly by a teacher to hear positive comments on their student’s academics or behaviors.  A newsletter written by the students is send to parents and guardians each month.

Parent Involvement / Activities In the event of extra-curricular activities, which are held throughout the school year and summer school, parents will be encouraged to attend.

School Community Activities and Partnerships We have a Southgate School Student Council available for all residential students that have reached the “Community Leader” school level (18 days of safe behavior).  Student Council members recycle, pick up trash, collect cans for Care and Share, and raise money for the American Heart Association through Jump Rope for Heart. The Student Council also organizes, plans and advertised student extra-curricular activities such as art shows, spelling bees, and talent shows.
